Onion Tank Advantages
Onion tanks are ideal portable water tanks that can easily be transported to remote sites for temporary water storage. While bladder tanks are also suitable for use in remote locations, the unique advantage of an onion tank is the size of the opening at the top of the tank. It allows for rapid fill and empty cycles because it is not limited to the size of a normal water tank outlet.
Onion Tank Kit and Fittings
An onion tank can be supplied with its own protective carry bag so it can be safely stored between fills. A reinforced groundsheet protects the onion tank from sharp objects on the ground where it is being filled. Protective covers are available and can be attached to the onion tank and almost any tank fittings and Storz fire hose fittings can be attached to an onion tank.
Filling an Onion Tank
Like any water tank, an onion tank should be laid out flat on smooth ground or on a groundsheet before filling. There should be no wrinkles in the base of the tank. The seam between the side wall and the floor of the onion tank should be visible all the way around the tank before filling commences. The onion tank can then be easily and quickly filled.
The video above shows the filling of an onion tank and the placement of a lid on top of the tank. While onion tanks lids are designed to block UV and dust, they are not air or water tight.
Onion Tank Applications
While an onion tank can be filled and emptied through normal tank and Storz outlets, the large opening at the top of the tank allows fast fill and empty cycles. Fasting fill and emptying is ideal where time is of the essence in applications such as mining and farming or in emergency applications such as bush fire fighting. When an onion tank is filled and emptied through the large opening, the floating collar around the edge of the opening simply lifts and lowers the tank walls so that the water does not flow over the top of the tank.
