Using Customised Bladder Tanks for Swimming Pool Balance Tanks

The dedicated and experienced team at Waterplex can make custom  bladder tanks to fit almost any available space, making sure that no empty space goes to waste. Swimming in pools means that a lot of water gets splashed out of the pool by swimmers. There’s also a lot of water displacement due to the number of swimmers stacked inside the pool. That displaced water needs to go somewhere, and that’s what a balance tank is for. This tank maintains a constant depth for the pool regardless of how many people are in it.

The problem with most balance tanks is that they take up a lot of space and are the opposite of flexible. Instead of using pre-determined bulky sized tanks, your best bet is to customise a bladder tank to the exact size you need for your swimming pool. This way, you are able to get the most out of the available space without wasting a single inch.

A bladder tank is an ideal solution if you have limited space or access where you need to store water. Because it rolls up to a fraction of its full capacity and it weighs very little relative to other tanks, it can be taken through almost any limited access area to its final location. The rule of thumb you should use is "if a person can get to the location, then a bladder tank can get to the location." It’s a flexible solution that offers greater benefits for a wide range of applications. Waterplex’s bladder tanks can be long and narrow, and they can even be made square. If you have limited space and you need to maximise your water storage, this is the best option for you.

There are a number things to consider when customising the ideal bladder tank solution for your swimming pool balance tank, and we’re going to go through them. We can manufacture the size and shape to suit your site, help with the material selection to suit your application, and determine the fittings selected to match your equipment.

Configuration: Framed vs. Reinforced

The first step is to determine the most appropriate product configuration, whether it would be a framed or reinforced bladder tank. This is the most important step as there are two very different types of bladder tanks available: the Eco Sac and the Reo Sac. Both have their advantages when it comes to offering optimal water storage for the property.

Essentially, you are determining whether you want a bladder tank with a frame or without a frame. The  Waterplex Eco Sac is the market leading only framed bladder tank available in Australia and is preferred by architects, designers, and hydraulic engineers. The Waterplex Reo Sac is the leading reinforced water storage solution for commercial and household applications.

Framed bladder tanks can store up to 20-percent more water per square metre due to bladder filling into the frame and harness. The steel frame makes sure that the size of the tank always remains the same, so there’s no expanding or contracting during the filling or emptying process. The steel frame also ensures that your tank will always stay inside the frame and not touch any part of the building structure. However, this is the more expensive option due to the steel frame and harness.

On the other hand, the reinforced bladder tank does not stretch so the capacity does not increase. During the filling or emptying process, the footprint of the tank changes as it expands and contracts. Without a frame, there is a risk that the tank might move in heavy rainfall events or if the ground is not completely level. However, it is the cheaper option since it does not have a frame.

If you are still uncertain about which type of bladder tank you should go with for your pool, we will answer any and all questions and help you figure out which type is better for your requirements and applications. The Waterplex team can work with your pool designer, builder, or plumber to determine the best location, ideal fittings configuration, and material for your swimming pool balance bladder tank.

Material

Depending on what you’re going to use your bladder tank for, we need to determine the most appropriate material to be used based on the bladder tank configuration, the use of the water, and the type of water to be stored. In this case, you’ll be storing chlorine-rich pool water within these tanks.

In the past, bulky balance tanks were engineered using carbon steel. This type of material didn’t stand a chance against the chlorine-rich fumes of the pool water. The tanks corroded very quickly, which lead to a failure in performance over time. Not these bladder tanks, though. We make sure that these tanks are engineered with incredibly durable high-quality materials that can withstand the strength of the liquid stored within them. We can work with you to determine exactly what kind of material you need to build a stronger and longer lasting balance tank for your pool.

Fittings

The next thing we need to do is determine the most appropriate fittings as an extensive range of fittings may be used with bladder tanks. We will work with you to determine the most appropriate fittings location to match your water storage requirements and your site.

We make sure that the bladder tank has rigid connections for all pipe work. It is an incredibly critical requirement that the bladder tank does not put stress on the pipes delivering water to or from the tank. Flexible connections will pit stress on rigid pipes that will cause them to crack and fail, so we need to ensure that that doesn’t happen by selecting the right kind of pipes and fittings for the job.

During the installation process, we make sure that all inlet and outlet connections are permanently visible and accessible. Like most equipment, bladder tanks or pumps may need to be maintained from time to time. That’s why it is really important that all connections to your bladder tank are always visible and permanently accessible. We don’t want to install the connections out of sight directly under the bladder tank that is likely to have the full weight of 1,000 litres of water resting on top of them.

In addition, we provide full material and workmanship warranty that can be tracked by a unique serial number. Before deciding what kind of bladder tank you want, you need to ensure that your bladder tank has a full material and workmanship warranty, that every single tank is tested before it leaves the factory, and that your tank will have a unique serial number permanently applied to ensure that the warranty can be tracked and linked back to the manufacturing process.
